Setting Up Your First AI Agent

Last updated: July 22, 2026

Before an agent can make calls, a few pieces need to be in place. This article walks through the setup in order.

The setup checklist

  1. AI Voice enabled — the AI Voice feature must be turned on for your practice. Without it, the AI Agents area isn't available. (Contact your account team if you don't see it.)

  2. Set up AI Agents — the first time, you'll see a Set Up AI Agents button that takes you to your practice's AI setup. This creates the connection your agents run on.

  3. Activate the agent — on the workflow's agent, click Activate Bot. This turns on the agent for that workflow and copies over its starting scripts. Once active, the agent shows an Active badge and "Actively handling this workflow."

  4. Assign a phone number — the agent needs a phone number to call from, with a chosen voice. See Agent Settings Reference → Voice & phone number.

  5. Add a workflow (recommended) — give the agent at least one workflow so it knows how to handle its calls. Without one, you'll see a warning that the agent "may not behave as intended."

Once these are done, the agent is ready. You can send a Test call to hear it before it contacts real patients.

What an AI campaign needs before it can launch

If you build a Campaign whose cadence includes an AI phone call touch, the campaign won't launch until its agent is ready. The Launch button stays disabled with the reason shown, in these cases:

  • No agent configured — "Configure an AI bot for [workflow] before launching — this campaign's cadence uses an AI channel."

  • No phone number — "The AI bot for [workflow] has no phone number yet — add one before launching."

You may also see a softer warning that doesn't block launch:

  • No workflow — "Your AI bot has no workflow yet — it may not behave as intended on calls. Add one before launching."

Fix the flagged item under Comms → Admin → AI Agents, then return to the campaign to launch.
