Understanding Treatment Code Rule Sets: Practice vs. Advisory Firm Views
In TeamCare, data accuracy depends on how we categorize procedures. However, a "one-size-fits-all" approach doesn’t always work when comparing multiple businesses. To solve this, TeamCare utilizes dual rule sets for Treatment Codes.
Why are there different rule sets?
The core reason is standardization vs. customization.
For the Practice: Every dental office has unique workflows. You might categorize a specific code under "Hygiene" because of how your bonus structure is set up locally.
For the Advisory Firm: A consultant managing 50 practices needs to compare them all fairly. If Practice A calls a code "Restorative" and Practice B calls that same code "Hygiene," the consultant can't accurately compare performance.
The Two Perspectives
Feature | Practice-Level View | Advisory Firm View |
Objective | Operational accuracy and local reporting. | "Apples-to-Apples" benchmarking across a portfolio. |
Code Mapping | Respects the specific category assignments made in the individual Practice Settings. | Uses a standardized master template applied to all clients in the firm. |
Who Sees It? | Practice owners and office staff logged into their specific dashboard. | Firm partners and consultants viewing the aggregate "Advisor" dashboard. |
How it Works in Practice
When you navigate to Analytics Settings > Treatment Codes (as shown in the screenshot below), you are defining the logic for your specific environment.

If you are a Practice User: The reports you generate for production, hygiene, and exams will strictly follow the codes you have mapped in your settings. This ensures your TeamCare data matches your internal expectations.
If you are an Advisory Firm User: When you log into your firm’s portal, TeamCare applies the Firm Rule Set. This overrides individual practice variations so that you can see which practices are truly over or under-performing based on a universal standard.
Key Takeaway
Neither view is "wrong"—they simply serve different purposes. The Practice view is for running the business, while the Advisory view is for measuring the network. > Note: If you notice a discrepancy between your firm’s report and your practice’s report, it is likely due to a specific code being mapped differently in the Firm Rule Set vs. the Practice Rule Set.
